[Harp-L] Re: ear plugs
For me, one ear with a soft plug can serve as a (head)
monitor... like plugging your ear with a finger, but
much more attractive. I plug the ear towards the
loudest player in the band leaving the other open to
hear my harp mix in the room. I will block two ears if
it's too loud, but it's seldom necessary.
I'm almost 60, and started carrying earplugs to gigs 30
years ago. No loss of hearing or occurrence of ringing.
(Hearing test last year) I've tried most of every
design I could find through the years. Various and
creative shapes of molded rubber and plastic weren't
comfortable for very long. It's easier now, with
inexpensive foam that expands to fit your ear canal.
I tried the sonic valves, but they seemed a) less
comfortable than foam, and b) were made for sudden
impact like shooters experience, rather than sustained
rocking bands. Takes a LOT of volume to close the
valve! In the "open" position, it's just reducing the
overall volume a little.
I confirm the preference for plugs at movie theaters,
too. I enjoy the show, and can still hear when I get
out of the theater. I recommend every player keep a few
foam plugs in your stage kit, ready as needed.
