So, I guess what I am asking is this. Who wears earplugs to play, and
what is the general feeling about them.

I wear 'Sonic ear valves' when playing with one particular bunch.
Apparently the keyboard man hasn't gotten the message as the club
where he plays has lowered the play times from 8-11 down to 7-10, and
NOW 6:30 till 9:30. All because the high rise apartment dwellers
across the channel from the marina were complaining about the noise
and the time was lowered to get UNDER the noise curfew (which is 9:30).
I like the plugs and at the end of the night my ears aren't ringing.
Feels funny though because like you, I sometimes have trouble hearing
even ME. S'okey because I can do the tunes by rote, and if it's
something tricky, I will peek at the chart to make sure I'm still on
track. You have to be careful though because if you are playing
without hearing well, you have to keep the chromo up to your lips or
you could find yourself on the wrong hole.
Not as much a problem with the short harp because it
is...well...short, and easier to keep your place.
