The best harp playing I've heard in a while was Stevie Wonder playing
Beribau with Sergio Mendez. I also like the harp playing on Beck's tune,
Jack Ass--not really innovative, but interesting.
Myself, I have bad habits. I pick up the harp and play the same old
stuff--Sonny Terry lite, some flashy riffs, a couple of rote 3rd position
tunes. Jamming is a wonderful idea, and there are times when that breaks one
out of the rut, but a lot of the time, with jamming I have some rote
phrases that get overused.
The thing that helps me the most is when I have to learn a turn around or a
riff note for note--it forces me to play something outside my comfort base.
I'm listening to a lot of classical music these days. Helps me focus on the
melody of the song rather than just riffing.
