[Harp-L] Re: Marine Band Name

It was named the "Marine Band" for marketing in the United States. John Phillip Sousa was a phe-nom of that day. Sousa took over the Marine Corps band in 1880 and he wrote a lot of marches we remember today, "Semper Fidelis" "Washington Post March" "Stars and Stripes Forever" come to mind.
Sousa and the Marine Band could be considered one of the first recording sensations. They made a bazillion cylinders in the 1890s and Sousa toured the band all over the country. Naming the harp so was a way for Hohner to cash in on Sousa's fame. A lot of makers followed suit with names, "Blaujacket" from Koch comes to mind, a good navy name. Seydel had a "Miltiary Music," etc.
