Thoughtful review, Jonathan. A correction, though. Coltrane popularized Afro Blue, but Mongo Santamaria wrote it.

Mongo Santamaria was a percussionist-if not for Coltrane,the song would have remained relativley obscure.

Incidentally, Mongo Santamaria's version of 'Watermelon Man' had a lot to do with making that song famous even though it was written by Herbie Hancock. I think that George was just pointing out that credit was due where credit was due.
