[Harp-L] Rick Davis - Gear Debate

Hey Rick,

I like your tone....and your band! Great blues crunch. I'm also with you on the equipment issue. How are we know what we like if we don't experiment with gear. Yes, it can get expensive but so what. Craigslist is a great gear unloader. Tone is such a subjective thing anyway. Do we all have to sound like either of the Walters or Cotton or Butter et al....?

Yeah, there is a similarity in tone but each has thier own style and inflection that makes them unique. None of us, pro, semi-pro, intermediate or newby started out sounding like any of our heroes. It takes years to get there. Why not enjoy some technology as well as support some the great equipment artisans (Ron Holmes, Sonny Jr, Heumann etc.....) of our chosen instrument along the way? Besides, its fun!

Truth be told, hack is in the ear of the beholder. Snobs are snobs and generally find fault with everything and everyone regardless of the subject's achievments, even the pros. In the words of the man himself, they "just cain't be satisfied". To those poor unfortunate souls I simply say, oh well! Enjoy developing your acoustic tone in your dark bathroom and may you find what you seek...in the dark, by yourself. When you find what you are looking for, then you can get some gear and learn what it takes to be a player in a band. Add a few more years to your timeline to become versed in that drama.

Me? I'm a multi-tasker and I aint gettin no younger!

To those of us who are bold enough to put ourselves out there and risk the criticism, cajoling, insults and other negativity, I'll see ya at the next gig with your new gear. I'll let you know how I like it without being crass, condescending or negative!

Peace!
