Tone should start as a solid inner ear awareness - you have to solidly  pre 
conceive it before you go for it.
 
Most players never consider this and go on that grail search without a  solid 
sound firmly imbedded inside as a guide. 
 
With a preconceived notion, you may begin to shape your reality to conform.  
Without it, you go through lots of gear and lots of $$ hoping the material  
objects will give it to you....eventually, they might, but why not go for the  
shorter path?
