[Harp-L] Shure SM57 microphone questions
For what's it's worth, my solution (for using a 545, which is sort of
like a 57) is to wrap the pinky and ring finger around the barrel of
the mic, just BEHIND the grill and press the barrel against the edge
of the palm/hand with those 2 fingers. This puts the grill well into
your hand and you form a tight cup from there with the remaining
fingers of the grip hand and the fingers and palm of your other
hand. Although i came up with this on my own, this also appears to
be what what Butterfield did if you watch him closely on YouTube
videos. The barrel of a 57 is narrower than a 545, though, but the
same technique should work.. Both mics are great but not very
ergonomic for an electric harmonica player. By comparison, most older
EV mics are easy to cup and usually sound great for harp (fat in the
midrange with relatively thick tone).
