Re: [Harp-L] Custom Harmonicas - a point that needs to be made

Seems like we're getting a little nit-picky here. What's wrong with somebody saying they're the best? Isn't that how the game is played? When you advertise for your band, do you say "We're the 14th best band in the county!" No, you say "We're the best band in the Tri-State area!" (Or in my case, "The best damn blues band west of the Big Blue River"). So what if there's a little bit of exaggeration there?

I checked out the website in question, and for my money, $52-$72 US sounds like a pretty good deal on a tuned harp. If you don't want to call that "custom", that's fine with me. But I think you're splitting hairs here.

I'm not really disagreeing with Steve, here, just wanted to butt in with my 2c.

I don't think anyone is saying anything on this thread that anyone else actually disagrees with. From what I hear, the top customisers have long waiting lists and so must be doing good business I presume. Tony is simply filling a different niche in the market for improved harmonicas. It isn't really a competition, though I hear that some are uncomfortable with the claims Tony makes for his harmonicas on his site. If you're a top player making money out of playing you will know the difference between what he offers and what the top dogs offer. He may be operating more at the budget end of things but there are hundreds of us who are glad he's there, doing the sorts of improvements to a standard that we may struggle to achieve at home ourselves, and giving us darn good value for our limited supply of money.
