Re: [Harp-L] Weber 5F2H Harp Amp

Hey Rick,
I built several of these with a few minor changes when they first came out.
What's really cool about this design from Bruce Collins (it's not Ted
Weber's design) of Mission Amps, who's right next door to you in Aurora, is
how quiet this beast is. Bruce is one of those genious amp
builder/designers.
There's no comparison to a Pro Jr. The PJ is not even in the same ball park
tonewise. To make it really grind I'd use a bright element with balls
unless you reduce the tone cap some and then you can use big fat dynamic
elements with it for maximum dynamic range of you choose. The tone pot is a
usuable 2Meg, which gives a very wide range of tonal capabilities. I'd sure
like to hear a Kinder Box through one of these little beasts.

The only bad thing about this amp is the weight. Just under 15 watts and 35
pounds....lugging that amp around to only mic it is tough to comes to grips
with in a bigger venue. However, I used the one I made for myself at
Martini Blues CLub and the sound guy commented how it was the best sounding
small amp he's ever mic'd. Piazza, Harman....all those guys he's worked
with at this club.

Be aware of the cheap Asian OT's tone. Some are good and some are not.
Also, if that amp just quits working it's a big possiblity that it's the
5F2H's Asian PT. Very bad quality control. I've had several that went out
over the years and won't use them anymore. It looks like the cathode bias
R has been changed from Ted's kit. I've had 2 from Ted's kit that blew on
me, so I went with m own quality 10 watt and never had another problem.

Good call here: You absolutely have to have Ted's 10 or 12A125-0 in this
amp. One of the best harp speakers ever made and the crunch in this amp
with it is wonderful!
