Re: [Harp-L] Pinched, whiny sounds
I use the 'clenched teeth' approach to produce that sound. It suggests rage, anger, to me, and it certainly has its place and uses.
I also deliberately try to make the draw 1 reed rattle against the covers when the mood takes me, to similar ends.
Sometimes the thin, reedy sound is just what is needed, rather than a smooth, rounded sound.
I have no problem with the natural sounds of the harmonica, as discussed here lately, and use all available at different times.

I have always loved pinched, whiny sounds on harp. I have often
played thru clenched teeth and that works well. Last week I
discovered (or possibly rediscovered) that if I pout out my bottom
lip, basically turning it as far inside out as I can and push the harp
hard against the lip, pucker embouchure, while playing wah wah sounds
with my hands, it gets a VERY pinched, whiny sound! It is reminiscent
of Rice Miller. I think it sounds best on low harps.
What are other ways you guys get pinched whiny sounds?
