If I use a specialized font for transcribing in tab, then If I send the result to other folks as a text or word-processor document, would they too have to own the font set to be able to properly view it? I guess it could be sent as a .pdf file without this problem.

You could use the font I designed for diatonic, called Fletch. It's set up for ease of use, fast keyboard entry, and legibility (in addition to having a very complete set of characters for diatonic). You can read the user's manual and see all the characters in the font here:
