The Stratton catalogue reference has nothing to do with the Civil War. It only provides an earlier documented harmonica reference than the one Dave Payne found.
My only point is that it is not inconceivable that a few German immigrants brought their own harmonicas to US, north and south, from the old country. How many? Who knows? During the war large numbers basically got off the boat in New York and joined the US army.
