[Harp-L] RE: Guy Forsyth
The first time I met Guy Forsyth was back in 1996 at the Sunny Furman Theater in Navasota, Texas. I had his live cd High Temperature that was released on a label out of Holland, so I knew who he was when I spotted him milling around in the lobby with his girlfriend. We had a nice chat and he was surprised that I had his recording. He was in town to be a piece of the first Navasota Blues Festival in honor of Mance Lipscomb. After we stepped inside the small venue, it was fairly apparent that there would be no organization to the evening. It kind of went willy-nilly. The event co-ordinator kicked off with a few Mance Lipscomb numbers and then we viewed Mance's bio flick, "A Well Spent Life".
Guy was finally introduced and since the theater was basically at the corner of where Mance first heard Blind Lemon Jefferson play the blues, he launched into immaculate covers of the pre-war bluesman. Guy played acoustic with no amplifier pickups and no vocal mic and the young man booommmed! He had the most powerful voice that I had ever heard and have ever heard since and his slide guitar was superb, and then, when he picked up his harp, he proved just how masterful he was on our instrument. I was quite envious, because I do believe he was in his twenties at the time and he sounded like a veteran and he absolutely should be considerably more famous than he is today. Anyway--
See ya--
