Re: [Harp-L] challenged by Chromatic
On the diatonic, you are accustomed to blocking only two holes. On the
chromatic, you must block three holes. The chromatic holes are also farther
apart. An octave is 27 mm wide on a diatonic and 44 mm wide on a chromatic.
If you are playing Cs, the chromatic can fool you into thinking that you
have a true octave when you are playing holes 1 & 4, 5 & 8, or 9 & 12 and
only blocking two holes. Practice on DEFGAB until you get the feel for it.
Open wide, push that big old chromatic deeper into your mouth, relax your
tongue, and..............smile!

Subject: [Harp-L] challenged by Chromatic
After following a recent thread on chromatics, I wanted to post about what
I
am finding most frustrating right now - tongue-blocking octaves. I am a
TB
diatonic player; I play TB in about 80% of my playing. But when I try to
do
octaves on the chromatic I'm flummoxed. I just can't make a tight fit,
let
alone even get clean octaves. So much of what I want to do is in octaves;
it just doesn't sound right to my ear without those fat octave tones.
