Just noticed this in the June 5, 2008, Chicago Tribune:
Former Chicagoan Lee Konitz, a revered alto saxophonist, is among six
recipients of America's most prestigious jazz prize, the National
Endowment for the Arts' Jazz Masters Award.
The other 2009 award winners, who will get their honors Oct. 17 at Jazz
at Lincoln Center in New York, are guitarist George Benson, drummer Jimmy
Cobb, harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans, trumpeter Snooky Young and
recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Each winner receives $25,000.
