See who's at Moondogs or the Thunderbird Cafe. I've seen great acts at both and Moondogs has a jam. It's a bit out of the way and don't be surprised if it's empty on jam night, but the band is pretty good and you can have a blast. There's a place up on Mt Washington too, name escapes me, but a guy named Willy Tri plays up there and he's a great harp player and great front man.
Get the City Paper when you hit town. It's free and the boxes are all around on the street where you can get them. It will have basically everything going on for that week. Also check pollstar.com and don't forget to check 'surrounding area'.
