Hi Bob -

There is absolutely no harm in keeping quiet in a jam situation when you 
don't know the tune. Most of us have a tendency to feel we must play 
even when we have nothing to contribute or just aren't ready to 
contribute in a musical way. If you sit out at least some of the time, 
you'll be more appreciated when you do play. Too many of us never learn 
when not to play ;-).
