The origin is attributed to Fats Waller who when asked 'what is rythmn'
replied 'man if you have to ask you aint got it'
There is a Waller compilation entitled 'If you have to ask.........'
This quote has been doing the rounds for decades and you can bet your life
it is entirely apocryphal,either he never said it or he said something
related which has been moulded into this glib maxim over the years,
