I'm trying to answer the same question .

One respondent to my inquiry indicated that only a guitar preamp  
section in a tube head will do if you want a fat bluesy sound.  
Otherwise a tube mic preamp will just warm up your sound .... which  
isn't a bad thing in general.

I do know that a quality preamp is very helpful in recording .

My main axe is a super 64 which I use for all genre of music including  
blues.  I'm trying to get a rig that can take my sound from clean and  
wet to fat and dirty because I'll use all sounds and feels in any one  
evening or gig. The catch is that I want one load in. I don't always  
have the luxury of dragging a guitar amp along,

Right now, I'm working with a small mixer and a JBL Eon 10 PA speaker.  
It easily competes with loud electric bands but is sweet enough for  
the quiet acoustic stuff. Now I'm trying to put together a rack setup  
that has the range of sounds I'm looking for.

PS I don't use bullet mics. Beyer Dynamics gives me a nice big sound,


Let me know what you learn. Me, I guess i'm headed to the music store  
to test a few options.
