Agree that simmplicity has beauty, but... times have changed and the attire you cite are extreme definitions of whatever adds to the charisma/ persona of the performer. 

Frankly, I even like drummers that are dressed up (e.g. the drummer in Conan O'Briens TV show who also featured in Bruce Springsteen's recent Grammy winning album). The truth is players who have reached stardom need to display their tattoos and don't see value in dressing up? 

Michael Jackson, in his days, needed magnesium derivative in his hair for the laser/ light effects on stage and all that glitter that you get to see from the Koko Taylors to Otis Clays- obviously they've thought it well to entertain the crowd giving them more bang for their bucks. 

It always works.

Not sure if you need to dress up for a SPAH event!
