Although what you say is true, it would be an unsatisfactory solution 
because you must first know the amount of surplus clearance and how much you 
need to reduce it.

Tate's and Schackner's methods both depend on placing a shim of  known 
thickness under the slide and then cutting off the flanges of the U-channel 
even with the top of the slide.  If done perfectly, the amount of clearance 
remaining is equal to the thickness of the shim.

Removing the excess flange height without damaging the flanges or the slide 
is where great care must be exercised or special tools used.
