Same way it is used for horns. Let's say a sax does the melody line.  
A harp can do the harmony line. (or vice versa). When I played  
trumpet I would do the melody line for several bars and then switch  
to harmony line, while the sax would do just the OPPOSITE. Then, you  
can trade fours, jumping from melody to harmony. Sort of a call &  
response scenario.
