Re: [Harp-L] Old style volume control

Hi,
The original ones were made by Switchcraft (Part# 329), and were discontinued in 1978, as Astatic never made any volume controls until they first put them on the blues Blaster in 1987, were also quite fragile, used a 100K pot, rather than a 1meg pot (which is minimum for crystals/ceramics, but far too high for CM/CR or dynamic mics), and had a more linear taper to them. This probably may be using the old style audio taper pot (which are used on real Bassmans, and never used on the reissues), which accounts for the sensitivity.

I had a couple of these ~ at the time they were a godsend, because it's
pretty much all there was. But the build wasn't especially solid, the wiring
inside was fragile, and the volume adjustment was pretty touchy as I remember.
Eventually they both just fell apart. Many here will tell you to (and rightly
so) that Greg Heumann's design is miles beyond in build, accuracy, durability
and overall usefulness. No affiliation, just a longtime appreciation of the
two inline VCs I've so far purchased from him.
