[Harp-L] URL's duplicating when posted

I've had a couple of folks write me inquiring as to why their posted links
end up duplicating with the first rendition being broken. I've always
suspected it was because the url's were posted in an HTML format but I've
never really tested that theory out. I don't use Outlook or HTML mail so
experiments require some effort on my part. Well Brendan Power figured it
out all on his own and it's confirmed. HTML url's aren't surviving the
de-miming process intact.

We de-mime all incoming posts to harp-l. What that means is we make them
all plain text by removing the mime portions of the e-mail and sending
only the underlying plain text e-mail to the list. This is why you cannot
post successfully to harp-l unless you use plain text, multi part mime or
multi part alternative text to compose in. What these formats have in
common with each other is they all have plain text hidden in them. Why we
do this is to keep list traffic smaller in size and to make it very
difficult to transmit a virus or a trojan via harp-l list mail. Currently
there is not a way to hide executables in plain text also an HTML e-mail
is more than triple the size of a plain text one with the same characters.

So if you were someone who was being bothered by your posted links being
turned to garbage and duplicated you might want to try switching to
composing your harp-l messages in plain text. Thanks, harp-l-lstowner
