Afraid there's a faulty assumption on your part, John: You assume that
all harmonicas are always improved X amount by the customizing
process, so that if one starts with a better stock harmonica, the
custom result is better + X instead of worse + X.  The customizing
process doesn't work quite like that: X is not a constant, due to the
inherent potential of the precise physical characteristics of a
reedplate--X is a variable.

A partial explanation would be to say that customizers are often
undoing what the factory did, so stock performance becomes irrelevant
if the potential is there.
