You got it Dan. That's all I was saying - I wasn't denying the existence
of Led Zep on the billboard charts and so forth. No question the music was
popular and selling. I was merely correcting the categorization of their
music as 'pop' back in those early-mid 70's days.
'Pop' was WABC and the stuff they played. Millions enjoyed it.
'Rock' was the stuff we got on WNEW (and later WPLJ in their early days)
with the Night Bird, it was new, cool, alternative stuff, LP records and
this new FM frequency. That's where the cool kids hung out, the stoners,
haha.
And I will confess, I did tune into some AM to get some of the R&B, Motown
and other genres that I enjoyed but I sure didn't want my friends to catch
me. Of course, that included Stevie Wonder (harp content!), I could never
get enough Superstition. Still can't.

Bill,
I don't disagree with your opinion about alot of the stuff on AM, but
Allison Steele, the "Nght Bird" didn't play Stevie Wonder,
because he wasn't hip.
Yes WABC played alot of junk, but the mix they had is completly gone
today.
Our music is put into categories today and that is
how it is packaged, marketed and sold to us.
You could hear on the same station, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Marvin
Gaye,
Johnny Cash, Motown, Stones, Kinks, Otis Redding,
Lovin' Spoonful, Beach Boys, Dean Martin, Jeannie C. Riley, Doors, Louie
Armstrong, Aretha, James Brown etc., etc. etc.
Totally democratic and a huge part of our collective musical
consciousness,
which is part of what we bring to the music we play.
Were'nt no Funk on FM in those days, or soul, or R & B.
But the ROCK was great!
Dan
