No no no Sean, you CAN replace the spring. Use a #2 safety pin. Place  
the pin in the retainer hole with The pointed leg cut off to just  
below the comb surface. Then snip the 'Eye' portion off to slightly  
ABOVE the slide hole. Simple as that.
