you can pick up one of these..it's cheap, easy to put around your wrist (or
attach to your belt), and fits the 270. I bought 2 off ebay a couple of
years ago and love them for travelling.

okay. as far as being able to 'date' the harmonica based on the box? You
are of course making the assumption that no one ever switched harmonicas
around and that the harmonica IN the box belongs TO that box? ;)
...for my part I have so many chromatics now, I've moved them around
...tossed one into a different case or box for transportation and storage, it could
easily become 'confusing'..but then I'm not trying to authenticate them.
It's simply not a foolproof method.
The harp itself is how you'd authenticate the date..and, unfortunately, your
seller provided one very poorly lit photo of that particular chromatic
(while also giving very good close up photos of the back of the comb of his other
'pristine' 270C..so it does make me question the condition of the one you
got). Mentioned a small dent in the metal, and that the 'wood front plate works
good' (which scares me a little since the mouthpiece should be metal), lol.
You have no photos of the comb, front or back...nor any photos of the rear
plate (to determine whether the harp is indeed pre-war based on the type of
'star' (or absence of).
Dave Payne might be able to better authenticate it for you based on a verbal
description. A couple of months ago I found a site from Britain (posted it
on slidemeister, but not sure I put it on here), from a collector who showed
in great detail a lot of these kinds of harps with their cases...I'll see if
I can find the link.
Elizabeth
P.S. please don't play it without cleaning the mouthpiece thoroughly?
....basically taking it apart too and making sure there isn't anything lurking
inside the comb. There are a lot of us who can help you do this. ;)

Hi,
I finally got a Chromatic harmonica. It is a Super Chromonica. It came in
a super red wooden box. I don't want to destroy the box by packing it
around. Does anyone have one of the new plastic boxes. Hohner said they would
sell me one for $11.00 + $9.00 shipping. Frankly, that is more than I paid for
the harp. Anyone want to make me a deal? Even if it is for a different
harp that would still fit that would be fine.
Just out of curiosity, can anyone give me a rough age of the harmonica based
on the box. It is wood with brass hinges and latch. Here is the ebay
listing

The front of the box looks like the one in the bottom left hand corner of
this picture. http://www.dargate.com/249_auction/249_images/3341.jpg
