Take a look at Dr. James Antaki's array of instrumentation in the attached article on Harmonica Reeds (Acoustics and Dynamics of the Diatonic Harmonica). I am impressed. Perhaps there's some engineering foundation here to analyze "reed quality". 

To those of you aspiring to have a workshop at SPAH, we could suggest to James to come over and demonstrate his technology.
