The Toronto Blues Society will hold a special workshop for
harmonica players and blues fans on Saturday afternoon, April 12 at
the Silver Dollar Room (486 Spadina Ave., Toronto).
The event will be hosted for the by Michael Pickett and is designed
to include both novice and seasoned players in an informative
dialogue that addresses harmonica tone, sound and style. The first
twenty students (under 18 years of age) to attend this workshop
will receive a free Hohner harmonica courtesy of Toronto harp man,
Mark Bird Stafford. Parents, bring your kids!
There is no one in the pop music world quite like Lee Oskar. His
unique role as a founding member and former lead harmonica player
for the pioneer funk/jazz group, WAR, won him international renown
for over two and a half decades. In 1983, Lee launched his own
brand of harmonicas, Lee Oskar Harmonicas, which have since become
a household name for harmonica players worldwide.
Michael Pickett embraces the Blues with style, substance and
integrity. In the 70s, 80s, and 90s he established himself as a
musically ground-breaking, electrifying harmonica player, leading
seminal bands Whiskey Howl, Wooden Teeth, and the Michael Pickett
Band. Over the years, Michael has performed with the likes of John
Lee Hooker, James Cotton, Bo Diddley, Koko Taylor, Robert Cray, and
Buddy Guy to name a few.
Michael and Lee will be joined on stage by some of the most
adventurous and inventive blues harp players including David
Rotundo and Steve Marriner.
There will be raffle prizes including Lee Oskar Harmonicas and
Hohner 150th Anniversary Harmonicas donated by Wilson Music.
The Harmonica Workshop is one of the most popular events in the
Toronto Blues Society's ongoing programme. It is made possible by
the generous support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the
Ontario Arts Council, the City of Torontothrough the Toronto Arts
Council, Wilson Music Services, Hohner, and Lee Oscar Harmonicas.
