Unless your name is Jerry Bruckheimer, why would you want to OWN the
songs used in your movie in the first place? Or is this standard
practice in the USA?
Ownership of songs is where the money is in the music business, so the
producers of movies want to own the music in their movies.
If some poor unfortunate soul writes a great song that winds up in that
movie other people will cover it, or it could be synched into other sound
tracks or commercials, or sampled in rap songs, and the people who own the
song will see a wonderful stream of cash.
I have friends in Nashville who survived for years on the music they wrote
that was synched into films for years before they started writing hits.
Jerry Bruckheimer would barely notice the revenue stream from a hit song,
and would not notice it at all if it's just from synching rights, but the
producers of this movie will be crazy to NOT exploit the extra income
streams they can develop from all this free music that is coming
in. Whether it's a few thousand bucks, or many thousand bucks, who sneers
at that?
For better or worse, standard practice in business is grab as much as you
can. It's just alot easier to bamboozle people who aspire to be in the
music business.
