i have two personal tricks I will share with you when I am in a SIT  
IN situation and have to play thru the PA.

When I do not have the ability to bring my own processor or amp, I am  
faced with the uncertain prospect of using
another unknown mike, sound system and speakers.

To gain some type of control, I employ one of two methods.

FOR BLUES GIGS-I have a very sweet custom blues mike (from dennis, mr  
microphone). It is a turner housing with a vintage sure element. It  
has tons of crunch but still has the highs and clarity I like. I had  
him design it with an unbalanced XLR on it. Therefore, I walk up to  
the unknown mike and, in a flash, I remove it from the cable and  
stick MY MIKE onto it.  What this does is give me just enough crunch  
in the mike to make it blend well with the blues. It approximates  
having an amp without bringing an amp. Plus, this mike has a volume  
control so I can work it. I have done this dozens of times with  
excellent results. Playing blues through this mike is far preferable  
to playing through a 58, IMO. Not as dirty as an amp and not as clean  
as the 58. Gets the job done.

FOR CLEAN JAZZ, POP OR COUNTRY GIGS-- I employ the same method as  
above except I use my FIREBALL V on it instead.
