If this is right, that Gary has passed on. Then that is one of the
greatest losses to the blues world.
Gary's tone, phrasing, constant stream of inventive ideas, and his
beautiful song writing are some of the greatest blues stuff around.
I for one cherish my CDs by Gary and constantly learn from them.
My band covers 2 of his tunes at the moment, and even my guitar
playing friends marvel at Garys stuff!

I'm so sorry to hear that. He was a really vital and inventive
player. He was also one of the few national harp acts that continued
to visit NYC every year or year and a half after the main blues clubs
collapsed here. Young too. Even as an R.N. specializing in hospice
care I feel winded when I read of a youngish harp vitality dying. d

Thats some right bad news there. Gary Primich was a very cool
harp player
and singer...one of my favourites. Tonight i'm gonnae put
on one of his
albums, turn it up really loud and let the whole street hear him blow.
Cheers for the music Gary. Al.

Just to follow up on what buzz wrote...
The actual seminar deadline for registration is Oct. 5th, and
payment arrangements can be made with Jason (he's very flexible).
The deadline of Sept. 27th is only if you need a hotel room in
Denver. After that date, the price goes from $89/night to $189/night!
Also, you can certainly try to email Jason directly, but he has a
very public email address that gets a lot of spam, and sometimes
legitimate emails (including ones from me...) get filtered out. So
if you have tried to email Jason and got no response, contact me at
pr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx and I will get the info you need or put you
directly in touch with Jason.
Ok, that's the last I will say about Rockers on-list until at least
the 10/5 registration deadline.

His website confirms his passing on Sept. 23.
I always loved his tone and would sit as close to the stage as I
could when he came to town.
I use to joke with him about being his third testicle because I would
hang down front when he played. lololol.
I studies his hands more then his music. He was my biggest influence
for coloring tone using hand movements
with a mic. Built and fixed a few chromes for him over the years.
It's been 2 years since I've seen him.
It looked like life on the road was catching up to him then. He
will be sorely missed.

What a shock. Gary Primich. Dead at 49. What a huge loss. Gary was
and remains as one of my key influences. We cover a few of his songs
in my band. I am simply in shock. Paul De Lay and Gary Primich - two
YOUNG outstanding and successful harp players - in the same year.
Damn.

Just saw Gary in August at D. Barrett's soloing seminar Aug 4/5 in
Austin.? Gary looked good, sounded great as usual, particularly
acoustically where his tone and various
shadings can be best heard.? He was the guest artist for the rest
of us (25 or so).? After he played some, he played guitar the rest
of the jam night until his fingers just about
gave?out.?
This is really shocking and a very sad day.? Just hightlights what
Warren Zevon said before he died -- "enjoy every sandwich."?
Similarly, for those of us who are up there in
years, every day is a gift,? And putting off playing or
procrastinating on working out some new licks on the assumption
that there are plenty of days ahead is sometimes,
unfortunately, not a solid assumption.
I, among many, will certainly miss him and his all-star playing.?
Mike

Well,
I myself was there last Monday and it is great to see a packed blues
venue, specially with young folks and pretty women, for sure!
But exaclty the fact that it was so full was a turn down for me, as I
couldn't get to the guy organizing the session. Result, I was tired
already, had had my quota of harmonica time enjoying a meal with
Richard Hunter earlier that evening, so I whent home.
But I got to go to a great and relaxed jam at the Adelaide later that
week, which I have described in detail here:
http://bresslau.blogspot.com/2007/09/tuesday-jam-at-adelaide.html
This would be my tip for anyone going to London and looking for a
enjoyable session.
BTW, London seems to be a great place for sessions, never saw
something similar. Just search the web for "london blues sessions" and
you'll get a couple of good listings.
Cheers,
Fernando, from Warwick University

These two posts combine to remind me of a great night about 5
years ago in London, England at a place called -Nothing But the
Blues Bar (that's where the fabulous Wes Weston youtube video was
taped).
I was visiting the UK with my family and had spent a week in
Scotland, then drove to York,?enjoying the sites and having a
great?time. Before leaving from the states I had done some
internet searching for harp blues jam opportunities and had found
Nothing But the Blues. I brought harps and mic with me on the
plane (not one problem with security, by the way) and planned to
visit the Monday night jam.?
However, our train ride from York to London was delayed by heat
and we were in a sweat the entire way to London. We checked into
our hotel late, and we were exhausted. I grabbed my harps and mic
and jumped on the Underground to the station near the bar, made it
to the station, got out and walked to the back street it is
located on. The place was so packed that a bouncer in a suit and
sunglasses stood at the door only letting people in when an equal
number of people went out. I pleaded with hime to let me in ("I'm
on holiday from the US and came to play harp, please let me in").
Well, that didn't impress him at all. I eventually got in @
11:30pm, met the jam leader, and told him my story. Well, my luck
changed - *he* said, "great!, I'll get you up right away!"
I barely managed to get a beer before I was called up to play with
a surprisingly tight band. I started slow, laying back, then got
the 'take your solo' nod.... I played some of my better stuff and
got the 'OK, this guy can PLAY' look that every jammer craves. A
super night.
Sorry to go on, but when I watched the youtube clip and saw where
it was?taped, I was sent back in time.??
Weston (and his backing band) cooks in that clip.
I recommend the Nothing But the Blues Bar in London if you get the
chance.

Last summer I went to an Austin HOOT (Harmonica Organization Of
Texas) meeting where Gary was presenting a seminar. Just his
basic "this is how I do it" stuff, very interesting. I was
surprised to learn that Gary tongue blocked, but couldn't tongue
block bend, so he switched to pucker for the bends. I was also
surprised at the repertoire of jazz, folk and country songs he
displayed.
At the end of the presentation while we were milling around, Gary
came over to me and said, "I hear you're a pretty good harp player;
let me hear you do something." He grabbed up Dan Ruppa's guitar and
started chording a little swing piece, while Dale Spalding joined in
with the lyrics to Louis Jordan's "Knock Me a Kiss". There I was,
soloing along while Gary Primich muled my guitar. What an
experience! We had a blast.
I know he fell on some hard times, and had struggled through them.
Seemed like he was hanging in there okay. I'm gonna miss Gary.

I have a 'rig', but I use the PA at least half the time; depends what
I'm playing. Sometimes I use both, playing through my amp but near the
PA mic so it picks up some sound.

Most serious harmonica players go through cycles, trying out different
