I would agree that tuning is as much an art as a science, perhaps  
more art, really.  However, I think that means that electronic tuners  
are things which give you a start, not an endpoint.  It is the ear  
training of a good tuner which makes all the difference in the  
world.  One of the guys at work said this about electronic tuners:

"The Korg is good, I'm better."

And he is, and so is anyone with the proper training, lots of  
experience and a bit of an innate ability (the first two more than  
the last).
