Regarding the BOSE PAS system... I tried it at a Guitar Center and am a believer.
I ordered the new L1 Model II version (the new one) and it shipped without the Tone Match Generator, so I did not get to try any on-board effects or use different channels. I sent it back after a few weeks when I found out I was going to be moving again and am primarily standing in at gigs while in NM.
Micing a small amp for tone is a way to combine the tone of a overdriven amp going through the mains with this system.
The problem that I see is that it is not traditional and so many players are used to being unable to hear the mix on stage well, have hearing damage, and are not aware that the audience can not understand most lyrics or subtleties unless the band brings it down.
A real disconnect for the audience. This leads to many listeners leaving after a set and the hard-core that remains also has hearing damage and are their for the comraderie as much as the music.
Lots of investment in headbanging is part of the heritage of wild child living long enough to experience the humiltity of aging.
When I am set to do vocals and am settled (ha!) I will buy this system. To hear the vocals and harp cut through the mix with definition and dynamics is fetching and I hope the popularity of this system grows.
It is worth checking out (Guitar Centers will demo) and BOSE will honor the 30 day trial period.

This system was discussed on the List a while ago. Iceman uses it and
is a bigfan. Chris Michalek, on the other hand, posted that Bose gear
gets slagged pretty heavily on the pro sound forums.
Here is a link to a thread about the PAS system on Gearslutz which,
despite its name, is a respected forum with some heavy hitters as
members:

location-recording/8810-bose-personal-music-sytem.html
The consensus on that forum seems to be that while most Bose stuff is
overrated and overpriced, the PAS system is actually very good.
