I disagree with the tone change. I've been using one almost three years and with a variety of amps. If you set it up as directed, it will change your eq a bit...definetly more sizzle. I really like the presence it can add to an amp. However, if you take the time to tinker with it, the differences are very minor. I've never once thought it made anything sound like a HarpKing.
For me, the key is not over using the middle knob (I turn it so that when I play hard it just starts to blink). Also, the more you turn the right knob past 2 o'clock, the more it will suck tone. I have a had time telling if that right knob changes the tone before that. If you crank all three knobs, it sounds like garbage...treat it like any other multi-band eq.
Finally, make sure you adjust the knobs everytime you use it. I know the instructions say that once it is calibrated you can leave it, but there are too many variables from gig to gig. I've ran test after test with and without the pedal, using various cables, and various microphones. I found that when used correctly, I can totally crank my amp and not have the fundamental tone noticeably different then without it. My experiences are with a Bassman Ltd, Kalamazoo, Double Trouble, Deluxe Reverb RI, VibroChamp, a solid state Fender practice amp, and somebody's custom guitar amp.
It took me a while to use it as a tool to not change my amp's tone....I remember hating the pedal for months.
