I have a Double Trouble and a Kinder Afb+...the tone of the 2x8 was great, but I switched to a 1x12 and like it even more. There is more volume and I like the absence of speaker break-up. I use it with a 12ay7 and plug into the low gain channel. With those settings, it is as loud as my Bassman can get at clubs, and it still has some headroom/volume. By switching tubes and inputs, I bet it can be even louder.
The problem with amps like the Bassman is you lose the effect of the 4x10 at low volumes.
The only think I don't like about it is not having a speaker out...which was MY oversite! I know Brian would've put one in with out any problems. That would've let me add speakers on a bigger stage to fill out my sound more. I always mike it and use the amp as a monitor, but it'd be sweet to run it through a big cab when I am no a big stage. It would sound even fuller!
FWIW...I would by from Brian again in a heart beat. One of these days I need to get one of the 5w amps of his!

I just picked up a used Double Trouble. It's a really
nice little amp and I had no problem being heard the
first time I took it out. The tone is excellent and
it was pretty resistant to feedback.
Prior to buying this amp, I had been using a Fender
Pro Jr w/ a Weber 10A125-O speaker and a 12AY7 in the
preamp socket. I liked this amp, but I was looking
for something a little bit louder. The smaller
cabinet seemed to cause it to feedback a bit early.
My alternate plan was to buy a used Allen Sweet Spot
or assemble one as a kit. (It's modified Princeton
Reverb circuit.)
I chose not to buy a Princeton mostly due to it's age
and I couldn't find one at a reasonsble price. By the
time, I finished replacing stuff, I thought the Sweet
Spot or the Double Trouble would be a reasonable
alternative and all the hardware would be new.
