[Harp-L] Dallas Chromatic seminar

Is anyone on the list planning to attend the Dallas Chromatic Seminar? I'm looking for someone that might want to share room expenses.

I know these aren't ODBG's records, but the two that influenced me the most
when I first got started back in '69 was the album titled "Canned Heat" and
"John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers."

I know that John Mayall isn't regarded here as being a true Blues-Harp
player like Little Walter etc. but it certainly got me going. I might not
be playing harp today if it had not been for those two.

Dave, you are too kind. As I told you I believe in sharing with those that share with others. Harp-l listmates are good at sharing, and I have learned a lot from all of you. I would love to meet anyone from the list who comes to New Orleans, and will alway try my best to be accomodating.

You are your wife Louisa are wonderful and interesting people. Glad I could be of service.

I am now going back to L&L (Lurking and Learning)

Thanks to harp-L listmate Harvey Berman we had a wonderful time in New Orleans this past weekend, and I warned him I would tell y'all: if you're goin' to N'Awlins, you can't do better than to wrangle Harvey into showin' you around!

Walkin' down Bourbon Street we'd pop into a club and within seconds he was invited up on stage to play with his pals! He even got me on stage, with no hesitation from the bands (brave souls!) What fun!

Whether touring the quarter, uptown, or across Ol' Muddy in Algiers or anywhere else, Harvey was warmly welcomed by friends wherever we went, and he represented harp players brilliantly with his warm wit and easy manner, and of course his tasteful and melodic harp playing.

And seeing/hearing Jumpin' Johnny Sansone at his birthday party at Liuzza's, pushing locomotive-strong soulful tone through his chromatic (and many other great players, check out Sunpie Barnes!) was a terrific treat!

It's great to have this on-line community, and to share it in person just makes it even better!

Thanks Harvey, and thanks Harp-L!

Check your local hardware store. I've seen Swiss Army knife type kits of what
appeared to be pozidrive bits in a nice neat package. Take a harp with you to
make sure.

I've heard the expression that diatonic is "more vocal sounding" and the
solo-tuned chromatic is more instrumental sounding.

Partly this is because of the extended bending available on the diatonic,
compared to the alleged limited bending on the chromatic.

But also because of the tuning. Just intonation is allegedly more human
voice-like than (most of ) the equal tempered chromatics (tuned like a piano).

Is the sax superior to the trumpet? No. Just different.

Same with the diatonic and chromatic. While they have a great deal in common,
they also are decidely different instruments -- even if you try to play them
the same.

But then even chromes are different. CX-12 doesn't sound anything like the
conventional chrome -- and that's why I like it.

This seems to have come out with no fanfare.

Those who appreciate Douglas Tate's peerless chromatic harmonica
playing can now hear a full CD of a live concert he gave in 2004, about
a year before his death.

Previously, all that has been generally available has been a few SPAH
videos and the handful of mp3 samples on his website. If you're
wondering what the fuss is about, visit the site and check out the
samples

I have not heard the CD so cannot comment on it beyond saying how glad
I am that something is available.

My first question would be: what kind of harp is it? Air leaks between
the comb and plates are not so common as other kinds of leaks, so I
wonder what design it it, and what in particular leads you to the
conclusion that's where the leaks are occurring. I'm not saying you're
wrong, it's just that different kinds of harps require different things
to seal these type of leaks. It might be that the wood comb is warped
or cracked and needs to be replaced, or that the wood needs to be
sealed or that the screws on a plastic combed harp need to be evenly re-
tensioned. There are lots of variations here.

Ronnie wrote many television theme tunes, includiing the one that all
British harmonica players are required to play at some time in their lives
by their aunties or grannies, namely the theme to "Last of the Summer Wine."
The other theme tune you're likely to be asked to play is the one to
"Dixon of Dock Green," which Ronnie DIDN'T write!

I'm offering a special on 1847's and a Cumberland Case. I was hoping
to run an advertisement in the next SPAH Publication but I'm afraid
it'll be too late for Christmas. You can view the special at: http://
www.customseydels.com/1847_special.html If I can help anyone with
Seydel questions please feel free to e-mail or call me. I'm glad to
help. My site is a work in progress but I'm available.

Thanks,
