A song needs a melody, harmonies to the melody, and a beat.

Creativity can be as simple as changing one aspect of the song, for  
example putting a rhumba beat to a traditional blues tune, or putting  
a bridge on a blues tune, or using nice jazz chords to harmonize with  
it. Nothing magical about it.

Playing with other musicians helps. Broadens your perspective and  
takes you out of your comfort zone.
