Essentially the same thing, with better (IMO) phrasing, from JW von Goethe,
ca. 1832:


"the best genius is that which absorbs and assimilates everything
while doing the least violence to its fundamental destiny -- that 
which we call character...

through instruction, training and ever more contemplation
the organs of man in their instinctive, free activity unite the
aquired with the innate to produce a harmonious unity that
astonishes the world"


May have missed a coma or two and switched a word here
