Learn all 24 Major and Minor scales with more practice up to 4 sharps  
and 4 flats.  Work with a teacher and don't use a book.  There are so  
many connections between different scales and arpeggios that no book  
can explain how to approach them.
Don't bite off more than you can chew; do a scale a week.

Knowing where you are and how to use the chromatic is not as hard as  
one thinks.
