I use my little battery powered Pignose quite a lot. It records well, and  
gives a reasonable low volume electric sound in very small venues
Mostly I use my 1971 vintage Sure Unisphere... But an SM-58 would be just  as 
good. Otherwise an Astatic JT-30 seems to work ok.
If you are going to buy a new mic, try it before you buy!
