Re: [Harp-L] Re: Art Tube MP

Since this thread is about *tube* gear, the tube involved has a great deal to do with whether this piece of equipment works for harp. A 12AX7 tube is a great preamp tube, but not necessarily what you want for harp. Switching the 12AX7 out for a 12AU7 or even a 12AT7 will help the sound quite a bit.

I'm sure someone who knows tubes better than I will be able to explain this better, but a 12AX7 is a higher-powered tube than one with the "U" or "T" designation and will cause a harp mic to feed back more easily than a "U" tube will. Also, the "X" requires a more powerful signal to drive it into distortion. A "U" tube (my personal preference) won't feed back as easily and is more easily driven into distortion.

The Tube MP has been a part of my gear for years and is a great "safety net" for gigging musicians to have tucked away in your road case in the event of an amp meltdown on the gig. I have an old demo recorded using a 58 through an MP and directly into the board if anyone wants to do a drive-by:
