It doesn't matter what you need. What does the song need? What does
the band want? I'll usually play one verse and chorus per song
Sometimes if it's a blues song I might get to trade verse and chorus
with the guitarist, lots of eye contact so we don't step on each
other. It's nervewracking to be on stage and not play but once you get
comfortable with it the band sounds better.
It's actually easier to play all the time. There's a skill to holding
back. Listen carefully and maintain eye contact with the singer and
the guitarist. Easy to space out. I usually play along in my head. Pay
attention and stay alert so when your solo comes you're ready to play.
Whip off a snappy riff, smile and leave the audience wanting more.
