Re: [Harp-L] question about Jazz Gillum

Howdy
Just about all of Gillum's earlier stuff was in 1st position; that's really what he excelled at. Later, in the late 40s he seems to have taken up 2nd position - maybe 'cus Victor wanted a more 'Sonny Boy I' sound - but he didn't seem to have the hang of it.
Yeah ... "Sarah Jane" is a great tune. G harp in 1st position - the tip off is the F# in octaves. The three versions I've got in different compilations all are about 24 cts sharp - which can fuzz up the brain a little.
That good-natured stuff gets overlooked in a world where the bad-ass TNT-smoker is the blues icon for all the little white boys <grin> I'm sure it will catch the imagination of your audience. Especially that part about "no underclothes"

Cheers,

Subject: [Harp-L] question about Jazz Gillum

Hi -
I recently got a collection of Jazz Gillum recordings, and it`s kind of nice to listen to a different style then I`m used to hearing. If I am not mistaken he is playing mostly 1st position (?)
Specifically, he has a song called "Sara Jane" (great lyrics! I`m gonna have to start playing that live) - what harp/positionis he playing there?
Thanks for any help
