Spec - a big thumbs-up for your post. Couldn't agree more. This list  
can get pedantic some times. I would add that (and I know this is  
obvious) technique aside, there ABSOLUTELY AND POSITIVELY is a  
difference between gear. Tone comes from the player AND his gear.  
Some amps sound better than others. Some mics sound better than others.
