Subject: [Harp-L] Pass the Test of Time /(Chris "Hammer" Smith)

Fabulous song...and shows just how "hip", jazzy, bluesy and modern a
chromatic can sound in the right hands (or mouth, rather) ;)

Sounds like a 16-hole to me...could be a Hering because of the
crispness..but there is also a sweetness of tone...so still could be one of the Hohner
280's, Super 64's, Super 64x or something else customized just for Chris
(Fernando would know a lot more than me about that :) ....but he has wonderful
throat/diaphragmal (?) vibrato...(proving that one CAN do it). He clearly
plays with passion and puts tons of emotion into his playing...MY prerequisite
for enjoying a chromatic player. It IS tremendous...you're right. Lots of
people can play technically well but their music sounds mechanical and flat to
my ears.... being able to infuse emotion into one's playing is something
ineffable (imho).

Many thanks Sergei, for pointing us to this song...it's wonderful, and the
guitar work on this piece is beautiful as well. I hadn't been to Chris' site
in a long while...I'll make sure to pay a LOT more attention, now. He's
astonishingly good, and can sure rock out with his band.

The tone on Chris "Hammer" Smith's Pass the Test of Time, on his
MySpace
page ( http://myspace.com/chrishammersmith ) is tremendous. Is that a
regular
chromatic or a custom instrument?

Sergei

Great song, thanks for the headsup!

It is probably a common chromatic harmonica. Might be customized, but the
tone will mostly come from Chris himself, not from any technical
modifications.

Cheers,
Fernando
