In the photo, Phil is playing into a home-made horn
that produces more volume. It is based on the one
that the great Deford Bailey used, which can be seen
in this photo:

Phil is a top-notch blues player, and played a couple
of Deford Bailey pieces that summer. And one or two
Sonny Terry numbers last summer.
