Or Miles Davis, whose solo on "So What" (on Kind of Blue) begins and ends on the root note.  Or Junior Walker, who could make a root, third, and fifth tell a thousand stories.
 
I think that ultimately most music is about leaving home, traveling somewhere, and returning home.  You start in a particular place, you go somewhere interesting and do interesting things there, and then you come back to where you started.

Nothing says "home" like the root note, which is the most stable of all, followed by the 5th.  If you want everyone to go "aaah" at the end of the solo, take them home.
